School improvement plan 2020-2023

Approved by the Governing Board the 26th of may, 2020

The school improvement plan of the European School Lille Métropole is the result of a reflection carried out jointly by staff, parents and students. It reflects the values and missions of the school. Established on the basis of a shared diagnosis and the aspirations of each individual, it reflects our common ambition to build a flourishing school community.

This project has three axes and seven objectives:

  1. EUROPEAN DEVELOPMENT = Opening up to Europe and European values.
  • Open the school to its cultural and European environment
  • Train European citizens by promoting tolerance and care for the environment.
  1. THE SPIRIT OF COLLABORATION = Develop exchanges and collaboration between students, teachers and partners.
  • Build a common professional culture
  • Build a united school community
  • Develop the external outreach of the school
  1. THE SUCCESS OF EVERYONE = Customizing students’ learning experiences in order to help them succeed.
  • Customizing students’ learning experiences to address their particular learning needs
  • Develop student autonomy

AXIS 1 / EUROPEAN DEVELOPMENT = Opening up to Europe and European values.

Objective 1 = Open the school to its cultural and European environment

Areas to develop:

  • The cultural and artistic openness of the students
  • Relations with historic and accredited European schools

Action plan

In the classroom

  • Have the students work on presentations about European countries and their history.
  • Organize exchanges of letters with other schools in Europe (not just the European school)

In the school

  • Submit Erasmus + projects to finance teacher and student mobility.
  • Host language assistants and young German volunteers.
  • Design a program to develop Europe-focused class activities across the school.
  • Promote cultural diversity: festivals, day of languages.

Outside the school

  • Organize teacher mobility in order to create a network of cooperative professionals.
  • Organize visits of European landmarks: the Parliament, the Museum of Europe, the house of European history, the cities where the EU was founded.
  • Organize student exchanges.
  • Take part in meetups within the EE network: Eurosport, FAME, Mini Parliament, Science.

Objective 2 = Train European citizens by promoting tolerance and care for the environment.

Areas to develop:

  • Knowledge of the cultural diversity of the members of the educational community
  • European citizenship of our students
  • European values: tolerance, social and civic skills, environmental protection

Action plan:

  • Mark the dates of national holidays (with flags) in each class.
  • Organize the intervention of parents who are nationals of a European country in the classes.
  • Increase awareness of sustainable development among stakeholders in order to become certified
  • Organize waste sorting in the school
  • Create a vegetable garden, build an insect house.
  • Work with non-profit organizations (poverty, etc.)

AXIS 2 / THE SPIRIT OF COLLABORATION = Develop exchanges and collaboration between students, teachers and partners.

Objective 3 = Build a common professional culture

Areas to develop:

  • Collaborative work
  • Continuing education

Action plan:

  • Welcome new teachers, tutor them.
  • Harmonize our pedagogical tools based on each other’s practices.
  • Organize peer-training (mutual observation, conferences, etc.)
  • Organize interventions by European teachers who are experts in their field to train school teachers.
  • Train together within the network of European schools: work on partnerships with EEs for the construction of common training modules.

Objective 4 = Build a united school community

Areas to develop:

  • Unifying events
  • Internal communication

Actions envisioned:

  • Jointly define and enhance the values and missions of the school.
  • Build community projects at the school level (logo, metamorphosis, choir, assembly, rally, etc.).
  • Welcome newcomers (families, students, teachers, non-teaching staff).
  • Organize cultural conferences for parents and staff.
  • Appoint a coordinator to communicate on what has been achieved in the classes.
  • Use tools to share the class activities with families: Class Dojo, Newsletter.
  • Highlight the different projects: videos on a blog (ENT) or edition of a school newspaper.

Objective 5 = Promote the school to the outside

Areas to develop:

  • The reputation of the school
  • Partnerships

Action plan:

  • Develop the school’s outreach with European authorities to increase awareness.
  • Update the website and define a protocol for keeping it up to date.
  • Build projects with classes from European schools in the network.
  • Participate in local organizations and initiatives: film festival, sports program, …
  • Develop joint projects with nearby schools (reading, sport, solidarity).
  • Build local partnerships with European / linguistic associations (the friends of Ealing, Franco-Croatian association, etc.).

AXIS 3 / THE SUCCESS OF ALL = Streamline the student’s personal journey in order to put them in a situation of success

Objective 6 = Streamline the personal journey of students

Areas to develop:

  • Support policy
  • Harmonization
  • Educational differentiation

Action plan:

  • Strengthen the procedures for identifying students with special needs.
  • Build tools and harmonize practices to best meet the needs of

students(activities, assessments, etc.).

  • Adapt and harmonize teaching practices.
  • Streamline the pedagogical proposals to ensure a continuity (avoid

redundancies, beware of the cohort effect).

  • Create school-specific guidelines for transitions between cycles.

Objective 7 = Develop student autonomy

Areas to develop:

  • Autonomy
  • Student engagement in school life

Action plan:

  • Use individual responsibility as a basis for behaviour policies (independent travel, group work at the library, etc.)
  • Build shared behaviour policies with the input of the students.
  • Carry on class activities on harmonized rules and regulations within the school.
  • Work on dedicated spaces in the playground.
  • Train student mediators for recess.
  • Establish a student board and a student lounge.
  • Promote educational activities that develop the children’s autonomy (group work, independent workshop, work plan, project-based learning, etc.)

  • Behavioural performance (truancy, sanctions)
